A Fish Tale from Our Adventures
On July 7, 2006, Mike Massey and his friend Gerry Moses embarked on a fishing adventure in Mulegé that they would never forget. Fishing out of Posada Concepción, they hit the waters from June 30th to July 1st and were met with abundant dorado.
“The dorado were in the same area every day, about 10 miles outside Point Concepción,” recalls Mike. “We found a string of sargassum weed paddies, and the dorado were boiling on the surface. From a distance, they looked like dolphins!”
Fishing on their 22-foot Cabo Cuddycon aptly named Tailchaser, they managed to reel in Dorado, with the largest catch weighing 30 pounds. The key to their success? Using squid and Krocodile lures to hold the schools of fish around the boat.
Why Fish in Mulegé?
Mulegé offers an array of sportfishing opportunities thanks to its unique geographic and climatic conditions. Located at about 26 degrees north latitude, Mulegé sits along the Sea of Cortez’s warm waters – perfect for targeting species such as tuna, dorado, and billfish, including the prized striped marlin and sailfish.
North of Punta Chivato, the cooler waters attract species like the spotted bay bass and the larger leopard grouper. These conditions provide a balanced setting for both reef fish and migratory species, making fishing here consistently productive.

The peak fishing seasons in Mulegé extend throughout the year, with varying species available depending on the time of year:
- Winter Months: Ideal for catching leopard grouper, yellowtail, and barracuda.
